Apoquel is a selective janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, which targets pruritogenic (itch creating) cytokines. It differs from other common dog pruritus therapies such as steroids, cyclosporines or antihistamines, Apoquel targets the key itch signal in the nervous system stopping the itch within four hours of onset, comparable to steroids. Apoquel is for use in dogs over 12 months in age and weighing more than 6.6 lbs. How is Apoquel Available?Apoquel requires a prescription from your veterinarian. Apoquel is sold per tablet or 100 count bottle in three strengths; Apoquel 3.6 mg tablet, Apoquel 5.4 mg tablet, and Apoquel 16 mg tablet. Apoquel Generic Name oclacitinib (ah-clas-eh-tee-nib) Apoquel Ingredient Apoquel tablets contain 3.6 mg, 5.4 mg, or 16 mg of oclacitinib as oclacitinib maleate per tablet What are possible side effects of Apoquel? Apoquel may increase susceptibility to infection, including demodicosis. It may also exacerbate neoplastic conditions. Adverse reactions reported in a masked field study included diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, new cutaneous or subcutaneous lumps, and lethargy. In most cases, diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, and lethargy spontaneously resolved with continued dosing.(see package insert for more details) Talk to your veterinarian if your dog has ever had an allergic reaction to this medication and check with veterinarian before giving a prescription or over the counter medications. Give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
